Grade 10 Subject Choices Guide 2026 — How Your Subjects Affect Your Career

Your Grade 10 subject choices are among the most important decisions you will make as a South African learner. In the CAPS (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement) system, you choose your subjects once at the start of Grade 10 — and these choices determine which university programmes and careers remain available to you when you finish school. This guide shows you exactly which subjects open which doors, and how to choose strategically.

How Subject Selection Works in Grade 10

Every South African Grade 10 learner must take exactly seven subjects under the CAPS curriculum:

Life Orientation is excluded from APS calculations at most universities. This means your 6 remaining subjects are what determines your APS and your university admission prospects.

The Five Subjects That Keep the Most Career Doors Open

If you are unsure about your career path, prioritise these five subjects to maximise your future options:

  1. Pure Mathematics (not Math Lit) — the single most important choice. Required for Engineering, Medicine, Computer Science, Actuarial Science, BCom Accounting, and hundreds of other programmes. Choosing Mathematical Literacy permanently closes these doors. Work with Tutor Lulu to improve your Maths mark rather than switching.
  2. Physical Sciences — required for all Engineering degrees, Medicine, Pharmacy, and BSc Natural Sciences. Also valued by technology companies, energy sector employers, and research institutions.
  3. Life Sciences (Biology) — required for Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, Veterinary Science, and all Health Science programmes. Useful for Environmental Science, Biotechnology, and Agriculture too.
  4. Accounting — one of the most universally useful electives. Strongly recommended for the BCom and CA(SA) pathway. Develops financial literacy and opens doors in banking, commerce, and business.
  5. English at a high level — critical for Law, Communications, Teaching, Management, and all customer-facing or leadership careers. Aim for 70%+ to keep competitive options at top universities open.

Can You Change Your Subject Choices After Grade 10?

Subject changes after Grade 10 are possible but rare and difficult. Your school must approve the change, and switching from Mathematical Literacy to Mathematics in Grade 11 means catching up on a full year of content while managing your other subjects simultaneously. It is far better to make the right choice before Grade 10 ends.
