Your Admission Point Score (APS) is the single most important number for university admission in South Africa. It is calculated from your NSC (matric) subject marks using the 7-level points system and is used by all 26 public universities to determine whether you qualify for a specific programme. Understanding your APS — and how to improve it — is the first step in planning your education after Grade 12.

The NSC 7-Level System — How APS Points Are Assigned

Each of your NSC subject percentages converts to a points level. You then add your best 6 subjects (most universities exclude Life Orientation). The maximum possible APS is 42 points (7 × 6 subjects).

How Different Universities Calculate APS

While all institutions use the NSC 7-level system as a starting point, important variations apply:

• UNISA includes Life Orientation in their APS calculation, which can add up to 7 extra points compared to other universities.
• UCT requires the NBT (National Benchmark Test) for most programmes in addition to APS. Your NBT performance affects placement and sometimes admission.
• Mathematical Literacy vs Mathematics: Some universities calculate a lower APS when Mathematical Literacy is used instead of pure Mathematics — even for the same percentage mark.
• Subject-specific minimums exist at most universities. For Medicine, you need Maths 70%+ AND Physical Sciences 70%+ regardless of your total APS.
• Stellenbosch University may require language minimums (Afrikaans or English) for specific faculties, on top of the APS requirement.

What APS Do You Need for University?

The right APS depends on your chosen programme, but here is a practical benchmark for South African learners in 2026:

• 38–42 APS: Excellent — qualifies for Medicine, Engineering, Dentistry, and most programmes at UCT, Wits, UP, and Stellenbosch.
• 32–37 APS: Strong — qualifies for most bachelor degrees including BCom, LLB, BSc, BA, and BEd at most universities.
• 26–31 APS: Good — qualifies for many bachelor degrees and all diploma programmes at universities of technology and UNISA.
• 20–25 APS: Moderate — qualifies for Higher Certificate and most diploma programmes. TVET colleges and UNISA are solid options.
